Fintech Trends and Topics – January 2025

Each month CCGroup’s data and analytics team will analyse the fintech media to understand the last month’s trending themes and emerging topics.

The aim is to help fintech brands guide thought leadership and earned/social media activities.

Every month we will seek to uncover:

  • Major themes – what were the most popular and least popular “evergreen” fintech themes?
  • The biggest stories – what were the most widely reported stories across fintech media?
  • Trending topics – what emerging topical issues have been turning the head of fintech media?
  • What’s coming up? – the likely key issues and topics that will drive the fintech media agenda in the coming month.

Here’s a sneak peek of our January report.

Most popular evergreen themes

AI remained the most dominant topic in fintech media, with discussions covering its impact on fraud detection, personalized banking, and algorithmic trading. Financial institutions and fintech startups continued to integrate AI-driven solutions, keeping it at the forefront of industry conversations.

While AI is the hottest topic in fintech by a significant distance, it is also the most crowded space. It’s an area that’s ripe for thought leadership, but the bar is high.

Least popular evergreen themes

While AI stole the spotlight, some fintech topics saw reduced media traction compared to previous months with BNPL the least covered issue.

As much as BNPL and others weren’t popular themes, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be focused on. Arguably they present a greater opportunity, especially with an update on UK BNPL regulation around the corner.

Biggest stories

Several major fintech stories captured media attention but the biggest story was the launch of the $TRUMP cryptocurrency.

The story drove a whopping 186 articles across fintech media outlets. That’s 10% of the total number of articles discussing blockchain and crypto.

Trending topics

In addition to evergreen themes, several trending fintech topics gained media traction including a raft of policies from President Donald Trump and the ongoing impact of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves’ budget.

These emerging issues present timely opportunities for thought leadership and commentary. .

What’s coming up?

Looking ahead, AI, crypto and operational resilience will likely set the media agenda in February.

Please take a look at our report to understand the specific drivers, as well as gain access to the wider findings.

We hope the report helps fintech marketing communications teams to better understand the media landscape and craft stories and commentaries that resonate with journalists.

Good luck!
